I figure my heart is only going to beat so many times – I’m not wasting those beats running around.

So, if you don’t say “in hospital” what do you say? We certainly say it in Britain and Australia.

They have shortened the biographical note, but I recall the old version said he was from New Zealand and now in Canada, so the construction would be expected. I had that culture shock when living in Canada. “The” is frequently dropped in referring to institutions – hospital, university, etc. It is missing in US usage in “she is going to school” and such.

Well, it DOES help circulation in general (stronger heart, better vascular structures, etc) including that to the brain so some people may feel “smarter” when they are getting a better nourished brain… but you’re actually “dumber” while running as the blood is going away from your brain to get to the muscles that need that nourishment. I’ve had the most trouble adding or instructing while I was most physically exhausted. ;-)

Of course, if you overdo exercise—working out harder than your body is ready for—you can damage yourself. But a proper and well-graduated program should get you healthier, not worse off.

The problem comes when a person tries to make up for years of neglect in one or two days.
