Did you google in french? Try “traversée d’animaux” or “passage d’animaux”.

Not sure if it’s French, or the one you’re thinking of, but a quick search found one for migrating toads.

No, the deer is most likely to kill the occupants of the car. Kinda like the signs in Maine. “SLOW DOWN FOR MOOSE”

Who in their right mind isn’t going to slow down when they see a walking VW on stilts?

Try “traversée d’animaux” in Bing image search. You will get several different signs, but I can’t tell what the third one is. Coyote? Dog? Cougar?

No. All of the other wildlife are small enough that the only way they will total a car is if you try to dodge them.

Wasn’t there a complaint a few months ago at such signs? The driver in question thought they should put the signs at less busy spots, so the deer could cross with greater safety. . . .

In the UK, zebras are pedestrian crossings. In the US, they’re football referees—equally endangered when crossing highways (or carriagedways, in the UK).

Other wild animals don’t usually do as much damage to the car as a deer does. A friend of mine once hit a deer with his compact car, the impact pushed his radiator into the fan and destroyed it so the car stopped running right there. The deer got up and ran off into the woods.
