I’ve had some success rolling the pill in peanut butter and freezing to firm, or stuffing into a soft boiled egg yolk. Still the pooch will often leave pill bits in the food bowl once he finds it, I just keep putting more food on top with each meal until it absorbs the flavor.
As a former vet tec, It was easy giving my Shep/Lab mix her pills without putting it in her food. My brother’s Rottweiler however, was such a chowhound, it was easy to fool him by putting the pill in his food!
Two cookies – or one cookie broken in half – smear with peanut butter or cream cheese, place pill in middle of cookie sandwich. Even the dog that will refuse to take a pill in a pill pocket or just wrapped in cheese or peanut butter is fooled by the cookie sandwich.

They can smell the pill. You have to completely enclose it inside something that is even stinkier, like cheese, and even that is not guaranteed.

My girl would eat a rock if you put gravy on it. Pills are not a problem.
