I once knew a dog named Prozac – you know, like the antidepressant drug? He was a flat-coated retriever, and one of the most cuddly dogs I’ve ever met.
I can’t think of a better antidepressant than dogs!
This also combines the need for some much needed exercise. If there’s no need to go out many times you don’t. Your new friend will provide the encouragement.
They are non judgmental and always there in your hour of need. I definitely think having a dog would cut down on the suicide crisis. To many folks are making a permanent decision on a temporary emotion, when the cuddle of your pet could redirect that emotion.
One of the doctors with whom I worked when I was in cardiology would do exactly this. “Get a shelter dog. You will save his life, and he will save yours.” He said there’s no point in simply telling folks they need more exercise, because they wouldn’t do it. A dog doesn’t take “later” for an answer.

If you have a pet you can hug, do so. If you don’t, get one, preferably a rescue.
