Around here, they usually disappear around the end of August and then return sometime in late September. No idea where they go. Building their winter nests?
We have no shortage of squirrels here, and the younger generation is just starting to run in traffic, not knowing which way to turn to avoid oncoming cars. I slow & stop once I can’t see if they made it clear of me, and they usually do make it. They help clean up under the bird feeders, so I want them to survive.
As a kid I went to our favorite fishing spot and noticed all the frogs were gone. Some kids had killed as many as they could using BB guns. The next time I tried to go the mosquitos were out of control. Couldn’t get near the place for almost a year.
I dunno about squirrels, but here in southern New England, I swear we have a bumper crop of chipmunks this year! My work keeps me driving around and outdoors a lot, and I swear I’ve seen more chipmunks in the last 2 weeks than I’ve seen before in my LIFE!

Squirrels who “take vacations” die. Squirreling is 24/7 job.
