The gender-imbalance in the geek world is such that a geek girl has the luxury of choice among geek boys regardless of her other qualities (note: I STRESS that the range of attractiveness among geek girls is fairly equivalent to that among the non-geeky). So those geek boys who find female companionship need additional qualities in order to compete. They STILL need to be kind and presentable and funny and have some semblance of social skills. Being Uber-geek will not do it, as Springfield’s Comic-Book Guy well knows (see the episode with Jack Black as an example of how this plays out).

The plus side of this is that, if you ARE a “catch” among the geek boys, you might actually attract attention from girls who don’t SHARE your interests but nonetheless don’t consider them buzzkills (Paul Rudd excels in these scenarios).

Of course, the BEST thing to do is develop a side interest in an area where the gender-imbalance is reversed. Theater is a good choice; not only are there more women than men in Drama Club, but a lot of the other guys involved will be gay and therefore not in competition (a stereotype, but true nonetheless). It’s an easy transition from role-playing on hex paper with multisided dice to role-playing under a proscenium arch.

And if all else fails, learn to play guitar.

I met my wife of 25 years playing AD&D. All you gotta do is show her you know that you know there is more to life than your 104th level paladin and his +10 Sword of Lordly Miight. It also helps if you understand her little, umm, “quirky” ways.

And then there is that geeky guy who finds a chick who is not geeky but marries him anyway.

    Baba Doodlius wins!
