A study at Stanford University says the world will run out of oil by 2052. There are other studies with very similar estimates. So, in about 30 years, bye-bye, oil. Ten years after that, natural gas will run out. Coal has until about 2090. These are non-renewable resources. For the conservatives reading this, I’m going to tell you what “non-renewable” means because you behave like you don’t know. It means it doesn’t renew.

In order to stop the warming trend, we need to get off of carbon-based sources totally. Before they run out and before it will be too hard to put that djinn back in the bottle. First stage stops all excess carbon dioxide production. Stage two is to absorb the oversaturation of that carbon dioxide to reduce it back to 360 ppm which has been the best saturation of CO2 for Humanity.

In essence, there’s no backsies when it comes to climate change. Once you’ve begun the full-scale destabilization and melting of the Greenland ice sheet and of the vast ice sheets in the Antarctic, for instance, the future inundation of coastal areas, including many of humanity’s major cities, is a foregone conclusion somewhere down the line. In fact, a recent study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change by 22 climate scientists, suggests that when it comes to the melting of ice sheets and the rise of seas and oceans, we’re not just talking about how life will be changed on Planet Earth in 2100 or even 2200. We’re potentially talking about what it will be like in 12,200, an expanse of time twice as long as human history to date. So many thousands of years are hard even to fathom, but as the study points out, “A considerable fraction of the carbon emitted to date and in the next 100 years will remain in the atmosphere for tens to hundreds of thousands of years.” The essence of the report, as Chris Mooney wrote in the Washington Post,is this:“In 10,000 years, if we totally let it rip, the planet could ultimately be an astonishing 7 degrees Celsius (12.6°F)

I’m starting to feel like making fun of republicans and their fellow-travelers is like making fun of people with mental disabilities. They can’t help it, and they’re doing the best they can. What’s different about republicans is that they’re trying to make the rest of us as miserable and ignorant as they are.

It’s deeply depressing that Ruben called this parody character “Earth Man” when his proper name should’ve been “Capitalism Man” (or “Captain Capitalism” for alliteration). Capitalism is a blip on a 10,000-year history of humanity. It is not the natural or default state of affairs, and it certainly is not the final economic system for us to achieve. It is, however, exploitative and can never be anything but. It emphasizes overproduction and short-term gains over long-term benefit. And it will destroy us all if we don’t change.

In other words, capitalism SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS!!!
