I guess “motif” is sometimes used by cognoscenti to mean the subject of a painting or photograph, but I hadn’t come across “motive” in that sense before. (In my experience, in non-specialized English the subject of a painting or photograph is just known as the “subject,” but then I don’t get around much.)
