From my Boy Scout days: One inch, keep off. / Two inches, one may. / Three inches, small groups. / Four inches, OK. Foreigners will have to convert to metric.
Reminds me of the time a new friend from Texas visited us in Illinois one winter. He walked out onto the frozen lake with me and noticed cracks. “What are these,” he asked, as he began jumping up and down on them!

Nothing ever freezes over in Orange County.

In central New Jersey we already had at least 3 deaths from falling through ice this year. Daytime temperatures have been too high to freeze solid.

My Dad lived in Alaska, up near Kodiak and he told me that he would check by shooting the ice with a .22LR. If he saw water it wasn’t think enough.
