Everyone’s just waiting for something to go wrong. My guess is that if the emerald isn’t lost at the bottom of the sea, something will happen to Mr. Maclellan’s boat that the insurance won’t cover.
Today’s semiprecious stones can be made artificially and don’t have the same value as the older real ones. Wallace’s emerald could easily fall into that category. You can’t tell them apart just by looking at them.
First ya need to know how much it’s worth and if there’s a market for it. If it’s an antique from a sunken ship there could be a reward, that would be nice.
My bet is that his mother goes to the Snug Harbor Historical Society to ask about newspaper stories in the past having to do with lost jewels. The SHHS has a 2-inch binder full of stories about pirate treasure and at the very back a story with the headline “Wife of Prominent Providence Lawyer Loses Gem on Beach” from 1929. Mrs, McLellan locates the former owner’s granddaughter, who happens to be Mrs. Collins (right name?) their neighbor, who sells the emerald and gives half the money to the McLellans. They use it to repair the engine on Mr. McLellan’s boat and to buy a new muffler for the pickup and to get some therapy for Sterling. Mrs. McLellan tells Wallace about the information about pirate treasure at the historical society and he reads the information in the binder with great excitement. He persuades his parents to buy him a metal detector and with Rose, Amelia and Spud he scours the Rhode Island coastline. As seniors in high school (equipped with a better detector) they discover incontrovertible proof, in the form of a hoard of coins including two of Harald Tryggvason (King of Norway 995-1000), that Vikings had sailed south around Cape Cod to Rhode Island. They also found a barely legible document preserved apparently in a bottle of mead, apparently a recipe for muslinggkakke.

Wallace should have it made into a piece of jewelry for his mother.

Ah, Del’s Frozen Lemonade — a Rhode Island favorite for generations. Spud’s got his priorities right.

Not sure what clamcakes are, but if they’re anything like fried clams, I’m in!

I’m surprised Spud wouldn’t spend the money on pizza with smoked gouda cheese.

I hope you’ll listen to your head as well, Wallace.

On the serious side, that might go a good way to financing a university education.

Not a clamcake fan (now you put some crabcakes in front of me…) but Del’s is great.

The emerald will turn out to have very little value and they will spend the money on ice cream as they had previously planned.

Wallace would spend the money on a fun party, excursion, whatever for all his friends.

Can’t wait what Wallace’s mom has to say when she sees the emerald…and what Dad has to say, and the look on Sterling’s face.
