Fortunately, the town they arrived at was home to a guy who managed to film everything and still survive, and he turned the film into a famous horror movie and got rich. Well… fortunately for him, anyway.
Last night the wife and I took a drive thru Anoka,MN to see the Halloween decorations. One house had a huge wooden pirate’s ship that was crewed with skeletons. It even had one of those 12 foot ones in the middle dressed up as the pirate captain! I can’t imagine all the time and work involved, but it was really cool.
…In a fog much like this, when a black ship with blood red sails set full, silently split the fog and ghosted over the bar. Her anchor noisily dropped into the water and unseen hands furled the sails. On her deck stood a solitary pale figure dressed in black, his face framed by black beard and hair.
I cried, “Ahoy, What ship, and what flag?”
The pale figure answered only, “A Dutchman.”
And that, Wallace, is how I met the Flying Dutchman.

Wallace must have the two coolest parents in the history of comic strips.

The skeleton pirate ship was totally lost in the fog. They ended up at Antonio Bay in northern California.
The Fog, 1980.

At first I thought it was going to be a Sterling origin story.

The difference between a sea story and a fairy tale. Fairy tale: once upon a time. Sea story: this ain’t no bull(spit).

The Skull sail on the first panel reminds me of Danae’s shirt in Non-Sequitur

Why are skeletons always smiling? Because nothing gets under their skin.
