Lovecraft didn’t die unknown. He died with a cult of followers and other author fans, but he was never really known to the general public until long after his death. His popularity is currently in another death spiral because he was a racist, an elitest, and a pile of poop. Now, that he’s out of copyright, other authors are rescuing his creations.
