I remember seeing MPATHG at the cinema when it was released in 1975. Before the opening credits had even finished, most of the audience were out of their seats and on the floor trying to contain their laughter, complete with tears streaming down the face, at the sheer absurdity on the screen – particularly the saga involving the mØØse and his sister, not to mention what they did with the people responsible for the credits. Ah, good times, good times…..
Years ago, I attended a performance by the traveling company for “Spamalot.” I was seated next to a woman who had season tickets to the Broadway shows on tour. She had never seen “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and was completely lost, not understanding why the audience was cracking up in advance of things like the Black Knight showing up and saying “None shall pass!”
That movie, in its original showing, was my first date with now wife of 40 years. She laughed at the right parts, so I figured a second date was in order. Caroline cannot tempt me to stray now that I know her dark secret.
Sigh…It’s not ‘congnitive’ it’s cognitive…It’s also used incorrectly. Cognitive dissonance is when your actions do not match your thoughts, so your thoughts change to match your actions.Example: If you’re given an exceedingly boring task, such as moving 99 pegs to the next empty hole, and you are given only a dollar for your efforts, you alter your thoughts from doing it for the money or the college credit, to believing that you enjoyed the experience and that it was a beneficial learning experience. Meanwhile, if you’re given twenty dollars for the same task, your thoughts do not change from doing it for the money or college credit.
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” is one of my wife’s favorite movies, and I think it’s very funny. And yes, it is a stupid movie, but since it’s a parody, it is supposed to be stupid. And therein lies the charm.
I saw that with the woman who later became my ex-wife. She did not like it and I should have taken the hint. Fifteen years later I saw it with another lady and she laughed at all the right places. We have been together ever since.
My hubby and I have seen both the original Monty Python movie AND Spamalot, and we have the musical soundtrack. What can I say, we like musicals AND we like wacky!
