The whole theory reminds me of the Diana Wynne Jones novel THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS, in which a young man discovers that there are multiple worlds, and they are all part of a board game being played a mysterious higher species. He becomes a random game piece, a discard, that can move between game-boards (worlds) and he collects companions who are in the same position.
The concept that we are living in some kind of manufactured environment can answer some of the anomalies that have been seen and recorded. It is not yet a theory like germ and gravity are. Sightings of animals frozen in place then coming to life. A bird trapped in the air flapping wildly are examples. A dog frozen in place then after a few minutes seems to come to life unharmed. If you could game that system, you could make yourself immortal and cure any ailment. And you could become a target for the operators of said environment.

Wait… “Working Daze” isn’t a reality TV show and the characters aren’t actors pretending they’re in a comic strip?

Kind of the opposite view that a solipsist has, that their self is the only thing that is real and everything else is created by him.
