The original drawing was male; a cartoon of a stag wearing a bathrobe and drinking a martini. It was changed to a rabbit wearing a bathrobe. Originally the magazine was going to be called “Stag Party”, but there was already a magazine called “Stag” in publication that threatened Hefner with a copyright infringment suit. To swerve away from the lawsuit, Hefner changed the name of the magazine to “Playboy” and the mascot to a rabbit.
