Hate to sound stupid but please explain this if you understand it. How do you get your head to pop out halfway down your neck? And how is that trying too hard? Maybe it’s just too badly drawn to convey the joke?
That’s like “I tried to grow taller but all that happened was my ankles grew 6 inches lower but my feet stayed where they were.” It’s required that there be at least some acknowledgement of reality to make a joke work.
