I found a patent from 1874 for an improvement to how the chairs were made, but, as the previous comment says, the chairs existed long before that.

The comic is comparing 1874 to the excitement over a new iphone, not the first iphone. The 1874 euphoria was for Rocking Chair 2.0.

I dunno…..all that hard rocking back and forth could cause brain sloshing in the cranium maybe even mild concussions. That could lead to euphoria and the need to play a banjo.
