I always thought that would be the way an interplanetary war would start. The aliens would be coming in to land in a relatively peaceful country like Canada, but would choose to land on Canada Day around sunset at a site where fireworks were being set off to celebrate the country’s birthday, and they would mistake the fireworks for an attack. Given the amount of warfare in our news and movies that they might have intercepted while observing us this would be a reasonable assumption on the aliens part.
