I thought they were used for soothing and teething (much like how cats and dogs are given chew toys). I guess I was wrong.

Here in Scotland my mother used to dip in in sugar and then in whisky, so now we have no teeth and we are alcohol dependent, but my father said ‘you don’t need teeth to drink whisky’.

Back in the 1950’s you could get OTC cough syrup with codeine.Also peppermint extract contains 89 percent alcohol – put a few drops in a shot of water and it was a good high for a 10 year old.

A neighbor moved their great uncle out of the city into our little valley to dry him out. He spent the rest of his life drinking sassafras tea. They didn’t find out until after he died that the sassafras base was 60 proof.
