Getting hit with a gourd leaves a dent.. jesters generally don’t like getting dented.

This is why performers should be grateful to the Aztecs.

The performers broke character before the audience broke more of them.

The act was so bad that they only stopped throwing when they ran out of ammo. Hence, the origins of the expression, “Are you out of your gourd??” :)
