Joe, I think it’s about the same as the health department’s policy on smoking in the cafeteria kitchen. Apparently, cook doesn’t care, and the principal has a more-than-zero-tolerance policy for him.

The character of the school cafeteria cook must have some recognizable traits that readers find familiar. Think of the lunch lady with the hairnet in the Archie comics.cookie in Beetle Bailey, etc.

I think everyone has some shared experience in having had to eat “institutional cooking”.

Of course, the upside was that, once in a while, a really good cook emerged, having gotten his training in the Army, Navy or Marines, and opened his own cafe or diner.

More than one kid has gotten into trouble for taking food from the cafeteria to the science room for testing. It’s educational for everyone, on many levels. With today’s tech, I’d go for a DNA test on that mystery meat. Should be standard curriculum. What are you eating?
