The 56 is a bit excessive perhaps, but that’s simply making room for the wide range of terms (often different terms for the same thing) that are out there. Since this is all about how individuals choose to identify themselves, what’s the problem?
Not sure you could call what Carl’s saying “homophobic,” but it is incorrect. There are people – a small number but not insignificant – who are born with genitalia which is neither male nor female. So, forgetting about how people view themselves, that is a necessary third category.
@cdward: Yes, but true hermaphrodites are so rare it hardly makes sense to count them.
I have always said that homosexuals had better hope that it is a choice and not inborn via DNA. Because if it is, there will, sooner or later, be a test for it and people may choose to abort “gay” fetuses, thereby virtually exterminating homosexuals. Cripes, some societies already abort based on fetus sex now.
Personally, I don’t get involved in whether or not homosexuality is a “sin”. If it is, God (insert your favorite name) can cast them to eternal torment and torture so anything I have to say on the matter is moot by comparison. If not, then it is still none of my business. I leave God’s work to God and don’t stick my nose where it doesn’t belong.
I’m happy to say that this is one thing I don’t have to think about and have no trouble deciding: female. Period. End of story. There’s too much else that I find confusing for me to start splitting hairs (or chromosomes) over gender. To those for whom “it’s complicated,” have at it.

Being homophobic and thinking something is idiotic (which this really is considering lots of them mean the same) is two different things.
