Ford would give prospective engineers a 1/2" mild steel plate with a hole in it, a file, and a square bar. They were expected to enlarge and shape the hole so the bar would “press fit.”
Harry Firestone is said to have used the same technique. Many of the old line tycoons hung out together socially [huntes, fished, etc.] so cross pollenation must have occured in the idea bank.
I heard that it was Thomas Edison who had that interview process for potential scientists. He was also a friend of Firestone and Ford, so they all may have used this interviewing technique. Or, it may be apocryphal.
I’ve heard the same story about Admiral Hyman Rickover and prospective nuclear power naval officers. He personally interviewed all prospective officers to be trained for the nuclear navy.

Pretty narrow-minded. Probably missed out on some really smart people that way.
