Transcript:
The Calling by Aungthan. So you’ve decided to be an artist. Congratulations. Or should I say… …commiserations? You’re in for a lifetime of uncertainty. Family, friends, lovers… …be prepared to lose them. KNOCK KNOCK This road can be a lonely one. Don’t worry, you’ll make new acquaintances. Their names are “ANXIETY”… …”FEAR”… …and “SELF-DOUBT”. They’ll be by your side forever. Through every embarrassment… …and rejection… …they are there… …whispering in your ear… FOO FIGHTERS WORLD TOUR …”YOU’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH”. Yet you live for THAT moment. When the spark strikes… …and you touch the light. Angels sing. Heavens part. The ROK LIVE MUSIC Gods tremble. CREATIVITY! NEW GENESIS Nothing compares. It nourishes the soul… …and enriches the spirit. The sacrifice repaid in full. At least that’s what you tell yourself. EVICTION NOTICE Two steps forward, one step back… …on a journey that never ends. DING DONG YAWN But don’t let me scare you. The decision was never yours to make. After all, you don’t choose your calling. The calling chooses you.

Don’t see an author’s name for this quote. Does that mean he’s illustrating his own words for a change? Good ones!

Your soul (call it what you will ) will guide you along the way. Best not to fight it for a happy life. Listen to the still, small voice when it points you in a positive direction. Money, power, material excess (at least an inordinate amount of them, are rarely the answer. Live for joy, or, as Joseph Campbell would have it, bliss. But only if you really understand what I just wrote!

That is such a true statement. The Calling Choses You.I know that feeling being where I am now. I did all kinds of jobs till 1981. Joined the Department and 34 years later still serving the Department and plan to for 4 more years till I finally hang up the gun and put the badge back in its case.

For those lucky few, an artistic calling pays the bills. But keep at it, regardless. I’m a visionary mixed media artist with practically no business sense, but am still at it at 71. But I made my living in a neurobiochemistry research lab. At a deep level, the two disciplines aren’t as different as they may seem at first glance. I was blessed with what I call a very effective “corpus colosseum”.

Gavin wrote this one himself. I suspect he has a lot of personal experience dealing with this, even if he’s not rockin’ a guitar.

How long will the parents keep at their soul-sucking mundane jobs to support his creative ass? They’re looking burnt-out.

Absolutely nothing compares with the rush of performing for people.
