That panel when he starts to eat his burger is the one I have issues with, sends me mixed signals. What is she supposed to express there? After all, waitresses are trained to make the customer feel special, the good ones at least. And here she seemed to be bored with this guy or worse behind his back.
Beautiful, Gavin. Sometimes the scariest things in life have to do not with scaling a massive mountain (which I have done,) but just reaching out to someone special, from your heart. I have a phrase…. “Just scary enough…” Kudos to you, sagacious cartoonist!
I would say that handing the customer an umbrella goes just a bit beyond making the customer feel special, it shows concern at least, and maybe interest in furthering the relationship beyond the customer/waitress paradigm.
Although I wouldn’t say this is the scenario General Patton had in mind when he said these words. He most likely had in mind the honor of dying on the battlefield while fighting the enemy.
I’m always amazed at the unexpected ways you come up with to illustrate quotes. Who else would have thought of a romance story by George S. Patton? Bravo!

To be fair, she was drawn as showing interest so no foul in this case.
