STANLEY KUBRICK ANSWERS A QUESTION Interviewer: If life is so purposeless, do you feel it’s worth living? Stanley Kubrick: Yes, for those who manage somehow to cope with our mortality. Stanley Kubrick: The very meaninglessness of life forces man to create his own meaning. Children, of course, began life with an untarnished sense of wonder… A capacity to experience total joy at something… …as simple as the greenness of a leaf. But as they grow older…. …the awareness of death and decay begins to impinge on their consciousness… ONCOLOGY DEPARTMENT …and subtly erode their JOIE DE VIVRE, their idealism… …and their assumption of immortality. As a child matures, he sees death and pain everywhere about him… HAL DAVIS 1968-2014 BELOVED HUSBAND AND FATHER …and begins to lose faith in the ultimate goodness of man. Men’s Clothing for Charity Shoes for Charity Hal’s Old Stuff But if he’s reasonably strong and lucky… …he can emerge from this twilight of the soul… …into a rebirth of life’s elan. THE SHINING A STANLEY KUBRICK FILM Both because of and in spite of his awareness of the meaninglessness of life, he can forge a fresh sense of purpose and affirmation. KUBRICK FILM EDITING STORYBOARDS LOCATIONS He may not recapture the same pure sense of wonder he was born with… …but he can shape something far more enduring and sustaining. The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent. “The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.”
“I read. I order books from the States. I literally go into bookstores, close my eyes, and take things off the shelf. If I don’t like the book after a bit, I don’t finish it. But I like to be surprised.”
“Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all.” Stanley Kubrick

Love Kubrick’s work. Except for the last one, and that has nothing to do with how well it was made or the subject matter. He was Genius.

Outstanding. Thank you, Sir, for this strip. It never fails to touch me in some fashion, but occasionally, like today, it touches a chord that brings back long-forgotten feelings and memories of long gone loved ones.

He must’ve really been sick. Very ancient looking for 46 years of age. Also, a VCR that still works, even in 2014?! (And kudos to Stanley Kubrick!)
