The first time I came across something like this was in an *H. P. Lovecraft" story. In the story “The Diary Of Alonzo Typer” where at the end the narrator is being dragged away by the thing as he furiously writes the last words to be found decades later.
However the first time I saw it was 1964 Jonny Quest, the last episode “Sea Haunt” a very Lovecraftian story of a Deep One on a cargo ship had Dr. Quest reading from the captain’s journal where it ends in mid sentence just like today. It was also in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” uses it too, strangely enough.
