Illegal drugs are such a scourge on people and society. I have no answer, it seems there IS no solution. I guess I feel most sympathy for children of addicts. They pay for their parents’ addictions in ways we cannot measure.

Make the DEALERS ingest /inject all the “product” they have on them- book them in the morgue, and save jail space.

I also think it is true that too much money is made on both sides of the law by keeping drugs criminal. Especially pot. I worked in a maximum security prison, and believe me, a good percentage of inmates were for drug related crimes. This problem of substance abuse will always be with us but alcohol and smoking are 2 non criminal addictions that cause plenty of problems. Prohibition was a total failure. I think pot should be decriminalized, regulated and taxed, for a start.

Portugal has experimented with decriminalization, and apparently it has been wildly successful. Incidentally, fennec, quite right - the most successful interventions have been medical, not legal. And after all, totally legal nicotine is not only addicting (love those “nicotinic” receptors in the brain, eh?), but cigarettes contain chemicals to enhance the addictive effects. And sugar is more addictive than heroin.

hmmmmmmmmm….could that ‘public service’ advice be meant as a ploy….you know….get the users to reveal themselves? “Hey Twitty….see over there….it’s another ‘Jumper’ “Yeah Muldoon….that makes 10 so far, and the night is still young” ……~Siren blazing~ ;)

A live addict has some (small) hope of recovery and rehabilitation, but a dead addict has none.

I too am in favor of decriminalization.

motive: I also saw Portugal’s experiment. I was pleased with the attempt and, as you noted, the success.

Didn’t China post the heads of drug dealers on posts around town? That put a stop to it. Don’t jump on me for advocating that, just stating what China did back when Britain was importing drugs there. I’m all for legalizing drugs and taxing it like any other commodity.
