I remember that little white spot that grew or shrank when you turned it on or off. One thing I don’t miss is the sound of “snow” when you hit an unused channel number!

Poor Linus…I had a brother like that. You had to pretend not to like a programme you were watching or he would change channels. Especially in the last 5 minutes of a mystery drama!

Linus, just turn it back on boy. When this was drawn we probably just had the three channels in the Uk. BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Then came Channel 4 and later still Channel Five. Now after the satellite boom, hundreds of them, many with official viewing figures of zero.

Zenith sold a tethered remote in 1950 until wireless remotes were introduced in 1955. This strip ran in 1965.

Linus obviously is too young to know how to turn on the telly.

I always sat that close to the tube. I also had to be directly in front of it—annoyed my family.

Yeah, you had channels 2 through 13 on one dial, then a UHF dial with channels 14 through…I dunno…99?

I downsized the cable package at my Mom’s summer getaway to something like 25 channels this summer, and my wife complained that we should’ve kept the larger package. I replied “Do you remember when all we had was ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS and two independent stations? Somehow we survived.”

    People do forget.

Linus goes to school – so I think he’d know how to turn on a TV…

I remember the first TV remote I ever saw. Size, shape and weight of a house-brick.

There were local stations that the networks shared in the 50s. Many places only got 1 or 2 channels. PBS was great if you had a tv that would get those channels(and the different antenna was hooked up). Things were much different then.

I remember when we had a tube (and I mean all tube, not just picture tube) B&W TV in the ’80s. Needed 3 mins. to warm up, and there were plenty spare parts for it! Now, if the job is expensive, you just get a new one)…

Obviously Linus is either too young to know how to turn the set back on, or because of his age (younger that bad ol’ big sister Lucy), is forbidden to touch the controls by the parents.I don’t see any evidence that a remote control was involved in this 1965 strip. ’Probably not a good idea to over-analyze the creative genius of Charles M. Schultz, anyway… (Lucy is the older sibling that almost everyone has had at one time or another…)

Shame on Peanuts Estate and/or GoComics for NOT running one of Schulz’s Remembrance Day comics. I KNOW he has some.

    LEST WE FORGET!
