When I was growing up, Mom got a special metal box put on the house for the paper (it rained a lot there). No way could she get the paper boy to put the newspaper in it, even though it was labelled “Newspapers only.” Nope, it was dropped on the front porch or nothing. Nowadays, everybody has those little plastic newspaper boxes-on-a-stick. Times change.
In Mobile, AL they have reduced the paper to 3 days a week – And the online version is impossible to navigate! VERY SAD!Glad I can get my daily comics online!
I had a paper route in my small town, Paper came by bus in the morning. We’d meet at bus station, divide papers, fold and rubber band them. My bicycle had twin saddle bag baskets on rear wheel and another basket over front wheel. We would get the papers delivered in time to get to school!
My son applied for a paper route when he was ten. In his interview, they asked for his address and then gave him the route that was in his neighborhood. It had 495 papers to be delivered every Saturday morning. His little brother (8 yrs old) helped fold and deliver them every week and dad and I walked with them to make sure they were safe. They both carried papers until they became lifeguards at 15. Good experience for all of us.

I delivered papers as an adult, about ten years ago, subcontracting from the main guy. Mostly it’s done by adults because they had to be delivered by 7 am. One of the worst jobs ever, people get really upset when their paper’s late (even if it’s because the press broke). It’s just a newspaper! Once I was in a bad car accident (drunk driver — and I was parked in a customer’s driveway at the time!) while doing the route, and not one of the customers showed any concern when the main guy told them what happened.
