What about an Event: My son made a specific wish for his grandparents to take him on an event next year (hi’s 12)
And for my oldest sons 18yrs bday: They gave ham a shopping event with them (buy some clothes, go on a cafe, go home to them for dinner, driving him home)
I think, that’s more in the spirit of Xmas (and giving) than presents
About books. I love books as much as the next guy, and have two bookcases filled to the brim. However as pointed out to me by tweens and teens most books can be downloaded onto most smartphones, I(whatevers) they have. So even if Jr. is a reader, he would probably just say give me the money, gift card for downloading the book.
Unless it’s your mother-in-law. Then it is always too small. I got a call one Christmas from a store that she frequents saying that she wanted to exchange it for a larger one.

A couple of my children are receiving books this year. I think it’s the best way to develop their interests, personality and brain power.

Both my kids always got books for Christmas, along with other things, and now I give books to my grandchildren, along with other things.

Gift cards. Just like money except they can only be used one place and they expire. Good idea.
