It’s not happening in America because A) labor united and government stepped in to require safe working conditions, and B) corporations moved to places where they are still allowed to abuse their workers. Until every country requires safe conditions, there will be slavery. The question is: what are the morals of those who “employ” those slaves?
We have workers falling off of cell phone towers here. Billion dollar companies skirt the safety laws by hiring subcontractors, who hire little subcontractors who bear the responsibility if something goes wrong.
@D PB: It’s still a management issue. If your worker does not want to work safely, the worker should be disciplined in some way. Allowing workers under your supervision to disregard safety rules, especially when set by the employer, means that any injuries or deaths resulting from allowing workers to disregard rules is the supervisor’s responsibility. I will agree that those in the ivory towers may not know what their middle management are or are not doing, but their job is to ensure that the middle managers are doing theirs.
According to the news, most of the clothes were going to Walmart. We may never find out who ordered the doors and windows locked to prevent escape. We do know this was not the first time.

I feel bad for the ones who live in high rises over the factories, and to keep them from suicide they have to put up safety nets! Real ones!
