In other words, he’d have done it whenever he felt like getting around to it — he just didn’t have enough time to feel like getting around to it!

He’ll have enough time now she’s home to give him “motivation”!

when my middle child was in HIGH SCHOOL, I told her to clean her room one day and left her to get it done while I ran to town, when I came back 2 or 3 hours later it was worse than before because she had emptied her dresser and closet into the middle of the floor to " " start from the beginning" "……What a mess and it took her 2 days to get it back to the way it was before she started cleaning. lol

she is now married with 2 children and is always complaining about how messy their rooms are. What goes around comes around.

A friend posted the other day: “I can’t clean my room because I keep getting distracted by all the cool stuff I find.”

So typical. My mom would say the same thing but of course I put off doing what she asked til the last minute rather than doing it right away and being done with it.

Yeah but I’m wondering where John and the pretty girl from town are right now?

By the same token, when Elly walked in on Michael she found him goofing around with toy cars. Had she seen Michael pushing a broom or securing his toys and games when she came in the house, chances are she would have been less likely to chew him out.

jeanie5448: The “mother’s curse” still works (“I hope when you have kids, they treat you like you treat me”). We carefully avoided ever giving the curse – but that didn’t help either.

Kids can be real procrastinators when it comes to doing their chores and the more dreaded the chore is, the longer it takes to do it too. I have the feeling that no matter HOW long John and Elly would have been gone . . . whether it was for an hour, a day, a week, a month or even a year . . . it STILL wouldn’t have been long enough for Michael to get all his toys cleaned up because he was too busy playing with them and enjoying his time alone to even begin — let alone finish — his assigned task!!!!!

It looks like a craft project mess, and she should encourage him. As Miss Frizzles says, “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy.” It’s how you learn!

Not exactly true. They were at the library for 15 minutes — we don’t know what the travel time is.

Elly asking Michael to keep the house she and John provide for him clean once in a while hardly qualifies her as a slave driver. Michael could be seeing the same prism as Calvin: “If my parents ask me to lift a finger they are being brutal to poor me who just wants to fart around.”
