Good names, but Darth Maul & Darth Vader would have sufficed….

I used to know a woman who had two cats, one black, one white. She didn’t bother to name them but they ended up referred to as the Black One and the White One. Then she got another black cat and it became Black Too. By the time I lost track of her she was up to Black Three and Black Four.

Officially, my two are Four Socks * Li’l Socks – they each have 4 white paws. But we get along with Little Girl and Little Boy. And for today, well I think it’s obvious that the brown one is Chewbacca. Why such complicated names?

I’ll bet it was Chewbacca that went for the snacks!

In our house, the names are always “evolving”. For example, years ago, we had a siamese that we called Figaro. Over time, it became “Fig”, Fig Newton", “Newton” and then, “Newt”. (That was when I was a kid in the 60’s…. PRE-Newt Gingrich )

I would guess that something similar might happen with these 2 littles ones…

Calling a cat, “Chewbacca,” really is contemptible. I’ll have to think about, “Equinox.” Maybe they could just call him, “Vern.”

I’ve always loved beautiful names for my cats, sometimes foreign language ones. One of my cats was Dragutsa Mica which is Romanian, Keiko which is Japanese, Macushla which is Irish, Ruari which is Irish. But there’s something about The Cat and The Other Cat that I find very cute.

Friends of mine found the greatest cat in the universe and named him Juggernaut because he was huge and unstoppable. A lying landlord made them get rid of him, so he became my cat, and his names multiplied: Juggernaut, Jug, J. R. Naut., J.R., Mr. Naut (he was very dignified), Chug-a-Bug (from his taste for cockroaches), Bug, The Bug, J, the Jaybird, etc. I’ve known many fine cats, but none have ever topped him.

(I once saw him sitting upright on his original human mommy’s lap as she stared into his eyes and petted his softball-sized head. Suddenly she said “Juggernaut, you’re the most magnificent being I’ve ever known.” Although I agreed, I asked her “What about Ray [her husband, a really fine fellow]?” She glowered at me, looked back at the cat and repeated, “Juggernaut, you’re the most magnificent being I’ve ever known.” Me too.)

Our cat “Half-Time” sez: Never, never a human or movie character name" … any self respecting cat would never respond to such ignominious names. Of course, cat names evolve as someone above commented. Half-Time is aptly named as he deigns to share himself half time with each “parent”. It takes time to learn a cat’s name – they are like the Sphinx in divulging their cat names. Let the games begin. What fun!

Our cat will respond to the name dumb-butt so long as it involves food, toys or lap patting.

We have 8 cats. Thumper Lou (Boo), Smudge (Moo), Cody (Toad), Skit (Bits, B, or Miss B when she’s really sounding off), Scat (Brat), Skamp (Loony), Dusty (Bop), and Tink (Stink). The first three have nicknames that are not based on personal traits, they just evolved that way somehow. The rest pretty much nicknamed themselves.

My black cat is named Sable because she has black fur. The white cat, who is also deaf (born that way) is Poufy or Puffy but it doesn’t matter since she doesn’t hear us calling. Then there is the three legged cat called Tres (3 in Spanish). I do call the three legged cat Squeaker cause she makes a squeak-like noise when she wants to be fed. That’s about it.
