Frazz by Jef Mallett for March 03, 2013
Transcript:
Frazz: I was cooking yesterday and spilled cinnmon. In times past, wars were fought over cinnamon. Wars! Traders died getting it from Ceylon to the New World. The stuff was, quite literally, more valuable than gold and I just walked away and got another jar. That's the magic of history. Caulfield: It can make wars and fortunes boring? Frazz: It can remind us we're living in charmed times. Caulfield: I stood near another human being and didn't get smallpox.

I think Frazz is pointing us here – Cinnamon Girl.

Though the cinnamon we use isn’t actual cinnamon. Actual Cinnamon bark is quite expensive. (maybe not WAR expensive, but quite pricy)

I like how the depiction of Frazz and the broom in the 6th panel reinforces the message that history gives us perspective.

They say, that, compared to thousands of years of history, this is the most peaceful time ever, when it comes to people killing people…Just a couple hundred years ago, life was cheap, brutal and short….

We fight over oil today, tomorrow, water. (At least that’s what experts say)

You don’t get Frazz’s intellect or insights from a GED. And when was he pictured as a student?
Zaristerex about 11 years ago
As you might know, salt was once traded the way money is used today. Later, in colonial times, people used to travel around the world just to buy a few spices.

The spice must flow!

How do you know what Frazz was like as a student? Was he a dropout or something? I must have missed something over the years.

They’re both cinnamon. One is Cinnamomum iners, and the other is Cinnamomum verum. Notice the similarity? One is called ‘true’ cinnamon for marketing purposes. You know, so they can make more money. And it’s not even referred to as true cinnamon by anyone that counts. Only those that wanna show off that they know something.

True cinnamon, as in “Ceylon cinnamon,” is quite expensive and hard to find in the U.S. or even in Europe. The “Bastard cinnamon” we find in the spice section at our groceries is really cassia, which is a cheap substitute and decent enough for baking with, but it doesn’t provide the health benefits that true cinnamon does. (http://tinyurl.com/dxhkc6d) The fact is, a lot of what is sold as spice nowadays is artificial. For the real thing, shop online (e.g., at myspicesage.com).

Read somewhere that cinnamon repels ants. It works, they won’t cross it. And it seems they don’t care if it is the ‘real’ stuff or pseudo-cinnamon.

Oh, my… that was fun! Cinnamon, Dizzy, Sweet Pea…etc. I haven’t heard those songs in so long! Love ‘em! •◡• (The reason I linked to Cinnamon Girl specifically was because Frazz is wearing a Neil Young T-shirt.)
BTW, on yesterday’s Frazz, I put up links to two sites that give the formulas for posting links and pictures, and other tips. Check ’em out, see what you think.

Lots of people are quite intelligent and knowledgeable without getting much of an education at a school. Etc, etc.

I don’t know about cinnamon, but wars were fought over nutmeg, mostly because it was thought to be a cure for malaria.
Most Americans and fans of They Might Be Giants know that New York was once New Amsterdam, and that the British bought it from the Dutch, but not why. It was because the Dutch wanted a monopoly on the “Dutch East Indies” to control the flow of nutmeg, and the British owned an island there.
You can read about nutmeg (and tulips) in The Botany of Desire.
Oh, and any hart desiccant will repel ants. Borax is cheaper than cinnamon. The sharp edges of the powder scratch their shells and they lose the ability to regulate their internal water levels. It has to be a desiccant so that it doesn’t become moist and turn into a slurry. Cinnamon doesn’t do that, as witnessed by all the idiots taking the “cinnamon challenge.”

Can’t say that jokingly in 2020. What happened to us, man?
