SOCIAL STUDIES TEST- CHAPTER 12 1. Who was Thomas Jefferson's first vice president? Ah! I can get this! Thomas Jefferson reminds me of Jefferson Airplane! What was one of their biggest hits? White Rabbit! Who's the world's most famous rabbit? Bugs Bunny! What does Bugs Bunny eat? Carrots! What color are carrots? Orange! What rhymes with orange? Nothing! What's the numerical equivalent of nothing? Zero! When the temperature's zero, how's the weather? Cold! When the weather's col, what do people say? Brrr! What's another way to spell it? BURR! Jefferson's first bide president was ARRON BURR! Time's up, people! Hand 'em in! It may be time for a new system. What did you put for question 10?

His path—although long—is association. I used it for learning the capitols of the US states. Example, capitol of Oregon is Salem. Salem Cigarettes. Capitol of Nebraska is Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln.

Nate’s system has already plummeted.
Bill Chapman about 11 years ago
It’s called Mnemonics – which is using associations to remember facts. There are various ways to do this from a simple “Roy G. Biv” to remember the colors of the visible light spectrum(Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet) to using a “memory house” in your mind with objects emplaced there to aid your recall of certain facts. Songs, pictures, ANYTHING can be used to aid a memory – as long as it is something a person can link to the fact/ memory needed. Some are very simple for generally easy things, others are very complicated for remembering things like entire pages of a book word for word. The more complex the process, the higher the chance of a mistake. But the entire process is dependent on the mind of the person using it – no one system will work the same way for many people, which makes it a very difficult skill to learn or master.

Side note – Nate is NOT doing it right. He is using a “memory path” method which can lead to mistakes and problems.

Agreed Nate.

They’re called Mnemonic Devices for those who don’t know, very handy for memorization. Unless, of course, you have to use 20 of them per fact.
bignatesgirl about 11 years ago
How does that even work?

Is it me, or does Nate’s system look like the upper intestine?

Francis’ question to Gina at the end would assure that there were at least ten quiz questions. So: if Mrs. G, in a gush of sympathy (or just plain pity!) would give Nate a couple good penmanship points on top of the ten he snagged for “mnemonicing” his way to one correct answer, he’ll bag at least a “12”!! Chuckle! CHUCKLE!!

Flivver, river and liver do NOT rhyme with silver. A word that would rhyme with silver woud need to end in -ilver. Sporange is not a dictionary word, but sporangium is.
