The right tombstone should have a built-in beer holder.

Wherever I go on vacation I visit the local cemeteries. It’s not a ghoulish thing – there are lessons to be learned. Long story short: A small cemetery in Galena, Illinois. Buried there are several victims of the cholera epidemic in 1833; two pastors dead, one in 1835, another in 1837. We tend to forget those things once happened, and can happen again..Same cemetery: A huge monument among many smaller ones. However, while the words can still be read on the small ones, nothing can be read on the big one – all eroded away. Sic transit gloria mundi..Another cemetery: Many small lamb-inscribed markers, badly eroded, where lie children who died in 1917 and 1918 – the great flu epidemic. Also there, a gravestone where the wife inscribed her husband’s name, left a blank for herself, got remarried and had herself buried with the other husband. .Cemeteries are more for the living than the dead. Such a contrast in people who visit: On a bright spring day, I see mourners in grief but also children playing among the monuments. And why not?.There’s a short story by Thurber that parodies “Tobacco Road.” The narrator mentions the dissipated patriarch of the clan has at that moment seven daughters lying in the cemetery – two of ‘em dead..Good job on these epitaph cartoons, Mr. Miller. How many total have you done so far?

Oh my! I just realized what Wiley did with the visuals! Check out the double rounds of the tomb stones, and the obelisk behind them. Very… ahem… virile! Can’t believe I missed it before. If it was a snake it would have, well, you know…

One trip to Canada turned into “the dead guy tour”, lots of interesting epitaphs and history. Of course in the Old west of Arizona one of my favorites was “Quickest gun in town, but couldn’t aim”.
