She’s correct, though: It’s not having a terrible effect on the conversation – It’s having a HORRIBLE effect on the conversation! :P

Only one way to deal with this problem: refuse to talk to her until she stops being such a PITA.

Did she just read his dialog balloon? Because effect vs. affect is a grammar mistake in writing… not so much in talking.

The solution to Joe’s mother constantly correcting his speech is simple. The first time she does it, politely ask her to stop. The second time she does it, immediately end the conversation and leave or if on the phone, hang up. Do not say anything at all, just remove yourself from her presence. Eventually she will get the message that her behavior is obnoxious and unacceptable and that you will tolerate it no longer.

For me I could have used her for English studies on writing papers includes better use of speach and puntuation. My husband uses words I am trying to bite my tongue but one word is had and I noticed the news media using the word had lots of times. Example – I had a car hit me while driving. Should be- Hello dear I did not get very far a car hit my truck broadside. Other words probably makes me nuts. Now I wish his mom would help me on what I written to make sound better. How can someone made a car hit an auto.

This is extremely annoying. Constant interruptions and invalidations of people with pedantry in grammar is rude. In class, no, it’s not the same. In communications between individuals on a casual level, it’s infuriating.

Swiftbow and ewalnut: Despite my oft-criticized Texas accent, no one has confused which word I was saying.

With the quality of the mentality of today’s speech & spelling, SOMEONE needs to take charge. America is showing its ignorance in spades.

If his grammar was way off, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to correct him. But to nit pick in every conversation sounds like she’s not interested in WHAT he is saying, just showing her superiority in grammar. I couldn’t take to her for fear of saying the wrong thing. My concentration would be compromised.

I loathe this woman! LOL I stop reading when I see her and jump to the next day…annoying when she appears the full week. Doctor Appelby is my other “skip”. :)
