Good morning, Vagabonds. Yesterday my Azeri friend and I went to Manhatttan and met his grandmother. Then we took the long subway ride to Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. We went to a Russian supermarket where my friend and his grandmother stocked up on foods that they missed from Azerbaijan. My friend suggested I take my rollator as I’m out of breath when I walk more than a block. So, I sat in my rollator near the entrance to the store. The man who stored customer’s bags and gave them numbers in order to reclaim them was an Uzbek. Since I can’t speak Russian (my friend’s grandmother speaks Russian fluently as she grew up in Azerbaijan when it was a Soviet Republic) I used my Turkish to make it sound like Uzbek. Uzbek and Turkish are as close as English and German. He told me that in Uzbekistan he was a dentist but in the US he was reduced to this job due to his lack of English and certification and he couldn’t make ends meet, so he planned on returning to Uzbekistan.
After that we walked (couldn’t find a bus or a cab) to the Baku Palace Restaurant. Good thing I had the rollator as we put their purchases under the seat. It must have been a mile and we were all exhausted by the time we reached the restaurant, but we had a good meal. The waiters were both Uzbek.
My friend had trouble calling a cab to get to the subway station with his app but once outside I spotted a cab (my friend is mostly blind). The cab driver had a long ponytail and was a Crimean Tatar which means he could speak Turkish. He drove us to the subway station and refused to take money as he enjoyed speaking Turkish with us.
Today, I will take my friend to the bus in Midtown so he can return to Baltimore where he works for an NGO. I will miss him. He charmed my roommate’s teenage brother who’s usually wary of people outside his own ethnic group (Indo-Carib) and they friended each other on Facebook..

Yesterday’s “church in the park” was a great success. Beautiful weather, if a bit windy, and great message. I was a little surprised that there weren’t any Cinco De Mayo celebrants out, though. We thought the park would be packed!

PS Because it was Cinco de Mayo, we met a lot of Mexicans going by subway to Flushing meadow Park to celebrate.
