Actually, knowing where the solid dirt is, as opposed to the diggable topsoil, would have been really useful when I was creating a new garden from the ground surrounding our newly-built house.

Those are great for installing fence posts. My post hole digger had a rock detector. There was a giant rock in every post hole I dug.
