I don’t think 15 year old kids should be having sex, but I know it happens — it happened back when I was young, too — that’s the age girls started dropping out of school because they got knocked up. You can say isn’t happening because it shouldn’t happen or you can recognize that what what should happen doesn’t always happen and try to deal with reality.

If the girl has a good relationship with her parents, and vice versa, the parents will know what is going on and will provide whatever input they deem appropriate.

If the girl has no relationship with the parents, there might be a darned good reason. For one example, some religious sects will kill the girl if she gets raped, because she brought dishonor to her family. If she is successful at hiding the fact she was raped (which is a whole other story, well-being-wise), she won’t be able to hide a pregnancy for too long.

It all starts with proper parenting. It is not the child’s fault if the parents don’t do their job. It is a shame that our society has degenerated to the point that some parents seem incapable of doing even the most obvious aspects of their responsibilities, but choosing to fail to recognize it is not a viable option.

The school and aspirin is a Red Herring here. They are not involved in the “pill” debate..The girl may obtain either med at the drug store. And rightfully so.

Much better for her to be vilified as an unwed mother and a drain on our welfare system for the next 18 years. It’s not always the “bad girls” that get pregnant. Kids in their teens are not fully capable of making all of the correct decisions, even when they have a fully functioning family around them. Kids are impressionable. Perhaps Mom and Dad were high school sweethearts, and even encouraged her dating a guy they approved of. If they believed they would be married someday, sex happens, even if she’s only fifteen. The morning after pill offers a chance to rectify something that could possibly ruin her entire future because of one bad decision, or possibly because of something that was not her decision at all.

The problem will get worse. Thanks to our food producers being allowed to add hormones and antibiotics to the animals we eat, children are becoming sexually capable as young as 8 years old. If we want these kids to abstain for 13-odd years, we have a lot bigger responsibility than we’ve been willing to take on. This is not the only consequence we can expect.

“Danny said:“WOW, you really don’t know kids, schools, churches or what’s going on in the world.

fact is she has an alcoholic mom, dad was killed in Iraq, and she was impregnated by a pedophile priest at the CYO where she was trying to get emotional support”.

Was that comment necessary? Also do you really believe the country is as low as you think it is, if you do leave."I love my country and i’ll not leave it (permanently) for the likes of you.I love it enough to deal with the reality as it exists and work (and pay) to make it better. My responsibility is to leave the world a better place than I found it, and I do that every day of my life.it seems the conservative view is just to leave the world as it is, squander it’s resources and deny reality (thank you lonecat).Teen pregnancy is nothing new. My grandmother got pregnant at 14 years old “disappeared” for a few months. She got pregnant again at 15 and this time it was a shotgun wedding that led to a 62 year marriage – all of which was unhappy. This was around 1910. And she had great parents (I was blessed enough to know both my great grandparents). The conservatives seem to want to deal with these problems like the church, sweep ’em under the rug and deny deny deny. You all need counseling.

Raped by “step dad”, or mother’s latest boyfriend, shouldn’t NEED parental consent to avert the potential consequences. It isn’t all about “loose morals” on the part of these teenage girls. Focusing on the age issue also avoids the FACT that the “conservatives” don’t want ANY WOMAN to have easy access to this form of birth control.

Yes, because parents might force the kid to have a baby she doesn’t want; In fact, it is quite possible that the parents already made sure that decent sex-ed was not available in the schools either, which is perhaps one of the reasons the kid got pregnant in the first place…why give them the power to compound their errors?

@Orthodox Catholic: are you for real? Have you done a personal study of Americans to be able to say that Conservatives don’t divorce, Conservatives don’t have extra-marital affairs, that Conservatives do NOT contribute to the destruction of “family values”…? Of course not; all you can do is spew your hatred of lefties and liberals…which shows that you have very little understanding of the message of your Church, which is to love your neighbour – even if he/she is a leftist or liberal… DUH!

Except that she doesn’t need parental consent to go to the store and buy her own aspirin and kids get into ‘rated’ movies all of the time. So….if the cartoonist has real concerns, he might want to give it another try. Parents have to earn their kid’s trust rather than thinking it can be legislated.

“There are more takers than makers now..”

You are correct. Even the makers are takers now. “Here is my enormous income. Here are my deductions. Do you do direct deposit, or do I need to wait for my refund in the mail?”

If you want to make the takers take less, it’s time to change the entire tax system and the entire welfare state. Encourage your legislator to get started. We can all hold our breath.

It was just a matter of time. He/she was harsh not only politically, but also personally.

It is only a matter of time until he/she reappears under a different name. We will know him/her by the messages he/she leaves.

We can all work together to build a hell on earth.

Then again quote futurama " Nothing brings a family closer together than being huddled in fear"

Your comments are the ones that have managed to drag religion into the ground in the 21st century. Just keep pounding away.

It’s kind of sad really that fanatics and zealots will destroy a few thousand years worth of literature and culture by creating such a nasty sub culture surrounding it

Having sex does not equal loose morals, and even if it does, it’s nobody’s business but those engaging in the consensual behavior. And if some con wants to say that a 15 year old can’t consent, that is how these things are treated when 2 15 year olds get it on. do you really want to be prosecuting a 15 year old boy that has sex with a 15 year old girl for statutory rape when they both wanted sex?

“No we do not, Claiming that the mom is an alcoholic and the dad is dead and she got pregnant is not seeing the world as it is, it is seeing only the worst. "you can be a poly-anna and only help those that don’t need it. and that’s your choice.unfortunately there are plenty of examples of the worst – indeed, there are much worse examples than what I stated. Like Miranda, we need to handle the worst examples to ensure the worst don’t fall through the cracks.i’ll give you another unfortunate example I learned a few years ago and still can’t get over it:Religious high school girls on my island (including those in parochial schools) often believe that anal sex isn’t really sex so if they have anal sex:1. It isn’t a sin2. they can’t get pregnant3. it’s safe (since their bf is straight) therefore they don’t need to use a condom.care to guess how these turn out?

Maybe she was raped.Maybe she was “seduced.”Maybe she was a willing participant.Maybe it was her first time.Maybe it was her hundred-and-first time.Maybe contraception was used, but failed.Maybe no contraception was used.Maybe she’s had thorough sex education.Maybe she was taught “Abstinence Only!”Maybe her parents would be understanding.Maybe they’d kick her out of the house.Maybe she’s told the male participant.Maybe she hasn’t told him.Maybe she doesn’t know where he is.Maybe she doesn’t know WHO he is.

At this point, that’s all irrelevant. SHE’S pregnant, or fears she might be; not her parents, not her teacher, not her minister, not her boyfriend.

If you believe abortion is murder (even on a fertilized egg of 24 hours’ existence) and she should bear the child and put it up for adoption, well, I disagree, but I understand your position.

But if you believe she should bear the child as punishment for being sexually active (as some above have intimated), you have a really twisted mindset.

I have read the news. I know all about the problems in the Catholic Church that came out 10 years ago. Holding onto that this long is a poor kind of bigotry."it may have surfaced a decade ago (actually further back than that), but incidents continue to “come out”.Perhaps it’s the same kind of bigotry that makes some of you ‘believers’ state that gay’s living openly is somehow ‘catholic bashing’.has someone tried to tell you who you can’t marry lately?

Boy, it sure was dumb of God to have puberty come on before, say, age 25.

The parents of teenagers can say “Don’t do it!” until they’re blue in the face, but the BODIES of teenagers are saying “Do it! Do it NOW! Do it AGAIN! Do it do it do it do it doitdoitdoitdoitdoit!!!!!”
