    baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Mix with acid to generate CO2 bubbles (i’e., bubbles in baked goods).

    Baking powder is baking soda + cream of tartar (acid).

    Mix baking powder with water (plus some heat if it’s double-acting kind) and it generate CO2 bubbles.

    You normally add baking soda to baking powder if you are using some additional acid like buttermilk.
