    A tad off topic but why did Facebook suddenly disappear from the list of “Shares”?

    Agree with kindnessmatters!! completely. What I’ve never understood, too, is why, in a gated community, Zimmerman felt the need to ride around with a gun patrolling streets and sidewalks. Isn’t the whole point of a gated community to make that unnecessary? To me Zimmerman comes across as a vigilante.

    Historically, gated communities “keep the riff-raff out” at first. Later, they turn into prisons for the wealthy. When large groups feel they need fences, guards, and gates to be able to feel safe, it says a lot about the society they are part of.

    It does, doesn’t it?

    And it says something about the society which accepts this, too.

    @David:

    No. Too much liability. Now that there are no more afternoon papers, the only papers that are delivered are dropped off to carriers at about 3 AM on some dark street corner. Too dangerous for kids in today’s society; newspapers will not take the chance, and I can’t blame them.

    The media has mis-portrayed Neighborhood Watch/Crime Watch efforts, at least as I’ve experienced them here in the deep South, where I live in a neighborhood with black people as well as whites, and where our Neighborhood Watch police liaison is an African-American. We NEVER take the law into our own hands in our group — we just look out for each other, mostly by teaching neighbors things like the importance of good outdoor lighting, locking garage doors, etc.

    By getting to know each other, we have made friends, and friendly acquaintances, among all racial/ethnic groups represented in our area. That is, rather than suspect strangers, we find a friendly “hello” goes a long way to establishing positive future interactions.

    I am so, so sorry that good multiracial community efforts like ours have been made to seem so negative by the media.

    There was no murder. A rigged trial that backfired on the state proved that. If you live to be a thug and you attack a person, you die as the thug you always wanted to be.

    No, he wasn’t trespassing. How was Zimmerman to know this? With what was in the 911 tape, what shows you he did not believe the need to keep an I as to where this unknown person was headed? Maybe Zimmerman should not have got out his car, but as all lawyers have said, that was not a crime. So, no it was not cause for Treyvon to use self defense. If Zimmerman have confronted Treyvon then yes it would have been. But as testimony presented by the state of Florida stated, it was Treyvon who confronted Zimmerman. The defense then noted after a 4 min period of time that neither of the two had contact it was Treyvon who stepped out and confronted Zimmerman. As presented in court Treyvon could have continued home during that period of time instead of lay in wait. Evidence presented was what led to the verdict, let’s move on.

    About “neighborhoods” and gated communities. I would never live in an area with either a “homeowners association” (they’re ultra-creepy enough) or a gated community like where my brother and mother moved to in Florida.

    I lived in the same house in my small town for 30+ years, and only locked the door when we were gone on a trip for a week or more. Then we moved to our current place, which is less than a mile from a minimum security prison, where they do occasionally have a “walk away”. I still don’t lock my doors when going to town, and in fact, leave my garage open when taking my scooter to town. I feel secure that my “guard dachshund”, “attack cat”, and “cockatiel cop”, can keep my home safe.

    Every time I’d visit my brother and mother in that “gated community”, I felt like I was getting let into that prison yard just over the hill, creepy, indeed. Does that define “freedom” in America today? Fear and loathing isn’t just in Las Vegas.

    Gives new meaning to the term “neighborhood watch”. Waving a white flag won’t necessarily help you. It could draw even more attention to you!

    No, I do not agree to the idea he profiled him the way you are proposing. With the crime in the community he was interested in knowing who this was acting suspicious. That is what the undisputed 911 tape shows. If he had stayed in his car and let the police come, would that have been profiling? The only difference between the two was he got out of the vehicle to keep an eye on where this person was going. If he was profiling the way you appear to suggest. Why did he call 911 and not just go after this person and wait till the right moment to shoot him? As far as the gun goes, that is a probable outcome, but it may have turned out that Treyvon would have been acquitted due to an unarmed Zimmerman. We can only speculate.
