Tigger, you don’t understand what you’re talking about. Michigan has been run by the GOP for several years now, and things have gotten much worse since they took over. Taxes were lowered — it turns out, that vastly increases government debt. Government services were deeply cut — turns out, that increases crime and lowers response time and damages the economy. Exactly what a rational person would predict. Pensions in Detroit are not padded, they’re very reasonable and keep retired people in their homes. Paul Krugman has a nice analysis of this, based on actual facts, not right-wing made-up hate-the-poor talking points, if you want to read it.

I agree, we need to end corporate welfare and increase revenues for public entities so they can get out of debt.
