This is not JUST about i.d. Gerrymandering is a nonissue since both parties do it. But closing a precinct in a town with only two that typically swings democrat is a direct impediment to access. It is designed to make lines longer and make people who have to work unable to vote. Reducing the days in which people can early vote, register, and some of these other tactics being have nothing to do with fraud, but with voter suppression.Just as Reps wanted to shut down ACORN because of its voter registration efforts, a one place where abuse could happen since ‘enemy’ applications can be destroyed, they now want to take the fight right up to the ballot box itself.Molon Labe said that ONE fraudulent vote was too many no matter what the cost to legal voters. Is this true?Should Americans be forced between going to work or going to the ballot box? Should the disabled and elderly be forced to stand in long lines for hours? How many legal voters must be forced to walk away from their right to vote in order to prevent that one, very rare, very improbable, fraudulent vote? The answer the Republicans would give, “ALL OF THEM, if they are Democrat.”Sadly, I can’t say that were Dems in total control, they might not do something similar. Though how they might suppress the vote of white people, I don’t know. Close the precincts on wall street?Respectfully,C.
The funniest comment on TV yesterday:A guest on a political show compared vote suppression to a Bar-B-Que contest. Who can suppress more, Texas or North Carolina.
(Yawn) Ignorance is so boring. Historically, voter suppression by the GOP is a bigger crime than voter fraud. And “voter fraud” has consistently been proven to be a GOP fantasy.
Just to remind you, since I was a military brat, I have my 62 year old original birth certificate, my original Social Security card, two proofs of residence, and I paid the $54 for a drivers license so I can vote.Others are not so lucky, including one niece who would have voted for Romney.
Right, because it was the Dems who pushed for the end of slavery and for civil rights… no wait, somehow that doesn’t equate to actual historical record. And why is it that the worst, most poor and most violent cities in our nation have been and continue to be operated by Dems who only seem to find amazing ways of making things worse? I’m amazed people still drink this spiked koolaide. I’m only ashamed it took me so many years to wake up and leave the Dems and their disastrous policies and their unflappable ability to create alternate realities to operate from. Now if only the Reps could get a clue.
It took my mother a year to qualify for Social Security because she couldn’t produce a birth certificate. In those days they were only filed in the county courthouse, and a lynch mob burned it. In other parts of Texas, it is a 350 mile round trip to get a driver’s license type photo ID. Could you make that trip without a car and still hold a job? That part has always voted Republican. I wonder why.
Here is what it takes to get an ID card in Florida. If you are homeless it costs an extra $6.50 and a drivers license renewal is $54.25..http://www.dmv.org/fl-florida/id-cards.php
wow, I marvel at anyone from any party who wants to keep people from voting! We live in a “democracy,” albeit an uber dysfunctional one, so we should want people to vote. There are countries in which you must vote by law and we, in our great smug powerful democracy, are trying to limit voting access. What a terrible state our country is in. there is virtually no evidence of voter fraud, but much evidence of Republican State controlled State houses and Senates are passing laws to decrease access to voting. The attempt to restrict voting by passing state laws is 100% attached to Republican run state governments. Go Mike L. for consistently pointing out the obvious.
“Yes indeed—it is the Cook County, IL precincts where the dead and animals get to vote along with those voting twice or more.”Another of the, “Is it true you’ve stopped beating your wife?” comments. Please provide proof that this has happened in the last 40 years.
Again, if people really wanted to stop voter fraud, the first move should be to provide voting machines that cannot be easily tampered with, and that provide a “receipt” that can be used to verify the votes if the machine’s results were under suspicion. It’s a whole lot easier for one individual to fix a machine to vote for thousands at once than it is for multiple individuals to vote more than once.
But just as forced trans-vaginal ultrasounds are “for the health of the woman”, voter fraud that happens almost as often as confirmed Sasquatch sightings is more important.
i am amazed at the number of people for voter fraud
while doing research for a city election in 2009 i found of the 70 people i know in my precinct who voted in 11/08 were 2 dead people [02/08 and 07/08] that is only 3%
in order to have a case you have to grab them in the act when i found a few months later that dead had voted nothing could be done that is a 3% vote fraud i found and i was not even looking for it
IMO Luckovich gave us a cartoon that is racist and totally false.-He portrays “minorities” as being lower class citizens who cannot rise to the normal level and comply with the ID Society that requires ID for almost everything people do.Drive, buy certain products, vote, access public sites and events….Daily life in 2013 requires ID. Most voter ID requirements such as proof of birth are paid for by the local government or recognize other ID such as drivers’ licenses.-If I was a “minority” I would be insulted by that low level assumption of my abilities.
ML King wouldn’t have anything to do with the Republican party of today.Everyone can see that, regardless of how much you promote that he was a Republican 50 years ago.
Tigger: Less than a thousand “New Black Panthers” in the country, but they are so powerful they affect elections more than billionaires? Reminds me of the old days when the communists were given similar superhuman powers to terrify the nation. One rank-and-file communist made a million-member organization the slave of Moscow. Oh Fear! Look under your bed each night!
I love it when conservatives say things like, “If Democrats had demanded we show a Photo ID to Vote Then you would approve.”The inference being that we’d support a bad idea if it was presented by our party. But for most of us that just isn’t true; a bad idea is a bad idea, regardless of who proposes it.Making it tougher for people to vote is voter suppression; we don’t favor fraud, but we don’t want to see eligible voters denied, ever.We Liberals support the quality of an idea, not the affiliation of the proponent. That’s why the President gets a fair amount of flack from his own party; we are willing to admit when things aren’t going well, and attach the blame accordingly. The GOP would support most any notion, regardless of how unfair it was, if it was endorsed by their leadership and would serve their selfish agenda.
You’re wrong. From SLATE: The Panthers are so stupid that they deployed to the same site they hit in 2008: The 4th district of Philadelphia’s 14th ward. Very few of the people who hyperventilate about this story have been to the polling place and checked out its vote. I have. The precinct, located in a retirement home, gave 596 votes to Barack Obama in 2008. It gave 13 votes to John McCain. Four years earlier, it had given 24 votes to George W. Bush. It’s a heavily black, Democratic area, which is why — four years after the first Fox freakout — no one has ever emerged to say he or she wanted to vote but was suppressed by the Panthers.

“Election reform” is when you can prevent members of the other political parties from voting.

He/she doesn’t. But that doesn’t keep some people from continuing to ask that very question.

The Senate has no Republicans? I’ll bet that when he finds out, Mitch McConnell will be very unhappy.
