That happened to me with one company I worked with. When they found out I was pregnant, they gave me a different position (I went from receptionist to branch secretary). I was soon to discover that the branch had been out sourced, coinciding with the date I was scheduled to take off for maternity. This way they could get rid of me and NOT give me maternity benefits; all I got was 3 sick days. Since it was a non-profit, I couldn’t fight it.
Working for a county government in California we learned that if you had a beer with lunch you could be fired on the spot for coming to work “under the influence”. However we had one employee who came to work high on methamphetamines and threatened his co-workers with a pistol. The result?. He was put in a special program and paid extra to compensate for the cost of the program and treatment.
I know at least 4 people who were “laid off” who should have been fired. Saying that though, there are a lot more people who are laid off who were perfectly good employees.

I was laid off once and they did call me back. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for me, I had found a better job in the meantime.
