It has something to do with respecting those older than us. We all need to learn it because if we’re lucky, we will live long enough to be those older people meriting the respect some day.
Calling someone “Mr {firstname}” is not uncommon and not disrespectful. It is a form of address to an elder and it is a form of address from a domestic to an employer.

In the area where I grew up Mr. First-name was a form of familiarity and respect. Usually felt over several generations.
