Though some people do kiss at midnight for superstition (under the mistaken belief that they’d be lonely for the year, if they didn’t), I would like to think that this was not the case at all, here.. that dear Rosa felt ‘witstful and longing, and Gunther just felt ’wistful and romantic’, here…..

You can see that Rosa is trying to draw Gunther further out of his shell. He is afraid to come on too strong for fear that would cause her to leave him. I’m sure every guy at Pitts H.S. has tried to hit her up and he doesn’t want to appear to be one of those kind of guys!

Yes, teenage boys like that do exist. My significant other told me that he was like that at that age, and he outgrew it in college. And I had a crush on a guy like that in high school; he was even more clueless than Gunther!

I don’t remember Gunther ever being interested in Rosa. It was the other way around. Rosa is pushing, sorta needy here.

Rosa, make your New Year’s resolution #1 to write this whole relationship off as a really bad idea, and move on with your life. It’s not worth the effort. Start looking ahead to post-graduation, when you can find a boyfriend who is a far better match for you. This pairing of characters never made any sense. It was just a plot contrivance to “free” Luann to seek other suitors, such as Quill.

Yesterday Rosa said a lot had changed. Now I think she meant her feeling for Gunther— he’s changed from a project to a disappointment.*Let’s hope Quill’s lessons can revive her interest.

-In panel 3, the sight line is higher-It’s the same as panel 4, where he’s talking directly to Rosa. At best, in panel 3, he’s looking at her forhead instead of into her eyes.

-Well, at least Gunther’s reaction wasn’t as bad as Sluggo’s in today’s ‘Nancy’!!!

Good thing ths guy is only a comic strip character. Nobody like this would exist in the real world… What a mama’s boy.

Who can say what will happen in the Luannverse, but even there, Gunther and Rosa should be done.

They have both gotten as much out of the relationship as there is to get. Gunther should see that he doesn’t have to settle for the first girl that treats him half way human, and Rosa has seen that she doesn’t have to hide her intelligence and play girl games to have someone interested in her.

Rosa is on her way to becoming a woman; she wants a mature realtionship, she wants to get out and see the real world and be an active part of it. Gunther is still going to be a boy/“young adult” for some time yet.

Rosa is very soon going to be meeting young men on her level that will be ready to match her stride for stride as she moves into the adult world and will offer her far more than Gunther can even imagine. Gunther will be a bittersweet memory with just a little sadness around the edges.

The only hope Gunther has is to say four little words.

“Let’s go to Ecuador.”

And the likelihood of him being able to say that is, unfortunately, slim to none.

Rosa is not as smart as we think if she keeps trying to get blood out of a stone. This is getting painful to watch.

Wow. It’s amazing that Rosa has put up with this for so long.

-bright, reliable, skillful, helpful, an all-’round nice guy. Painfully shy around available women, and never did leave the family home-We always hear that men are able to ‘compartmentalize’ the different aspects of their lives, and keep personal removed totally from career. This is usually meant as a compliment, and those who are saying it also accuse women of being unable to ‘compartmentalize’, of bringing emotion and feeling into what should be the almost totally bland work setting.-

Here, though, we see an example of compartmentalization taken way too far. Gunther may or may not think about Rosa and care about her, but he has gotten so used to putting emotions away when he’s in contact with others, and just acting like his own image of a reliable, helpful man that he doesn’t know how to bring emotion into the part of his life where it belongs.

-Remember, he has no role model at home. His Dad is gone, so he has no one to look at for an example of how to act.

Thanks, this has been an issue in my family, and I’m always proud that my brother has been able to be a great Dad to his kids and husband, even though our father died when he was just a bit older than 4. By the time our Mom remarried, we had been without an adult man in our lives for some time, and I know it does make a difference…
