I worked in the dorm food service unit in the mid-90’s at college. I came in for my shift and found someone else’s timecard in my slot. Found out I had been replaced the Monday after I failed to show up for the 4 consecutive weekend substitute shifts I signed up for and forgot about. Shift manager didn’t even bother to call me to find out if I was sick, dead, or in jail. It’s a cold hard heartless world filled with people who want you to fail more than they care to see you succeed, but I knew that long before that incident so it didn’t bother me much.
