I realize this was discussed earlier, but many readers will be startled by today’s strip, since they will be old enough to remember that in thier own high school days girls without escorts weren’t allowed to attend Proms or other school dances. I suppose nowadays Bernice and Delta would in fact be allowed to attend individually or as a “couple”. Times change…

I think Bernice needs “Insta-Glam” today, IJB! (couldn’t reply on your post, had to comment separately…what causes that?)… ;)

I do think Bernice is a bit over-glammed…I wonder why she felt she had to look like a cover-girl photo… One thing, I think, is that her face-glam will match her outstanding prom dress… ;)

Bernice, I think, is only at half-glam so far. But at least she’s on her way. Delta may be a little too relaxed about readying herself for prom.

I don’t quite understand. I thought Delta’s idea was to use the money they would have spent on prom feeding hungry families. If they are going to prom anyways then what is the point of feeding the families on prom night? Surely Delta doesn’t go and feed families every night of the year. It feels a bit like Delta is just trying to assuage her first word guilt

    1) I think Bernice looks great, especially her hair.2) In reality, Bernice would be wearing a buttoned shirt. There is no way she would pull a tee shirt over her hair.

Back in the early ’70s the posters around the school advertising the dances gave the prices for Stag and Drag. ~Thirty years later a neighbor girl who was openly trans took her girlfriend to the prom. She dressed in a pinstriped suit. The next school year the school dress code forbade cross dressing at school or any school dance. It was a silly rule since boys and girls wear similar clothing to school anyhow. ~I wonder if Bern will break a nail making the dinner.

Well Blunebottle’s prom is just a decade after my HS days. I did not attend any dances (none were “required”). I remember being required to attend a pep meeting (the whole school) which was a total PITA.

My persona at school was very Bernice like (ultra studious and straight laced) but I dated an older guy that no one knew about, away from school.

Have we ever seen a genuinely poor person in Pitt? Everyone at the high school seems middle-class. Does the community even have any really “needy” families? It seems like a place where few, if any, low-income households reside. Maybe they’re driving to some nearby town to feed the needy there instead?

PuzzleWhz: 1) Bernice is not finished— she’ll spend 2 hours finetuning what she put on with a trowel, 2) the lights at the dance will be dim, so outlandish makeup will be required.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… people who are needy aren’t always some picture of “rag-abond-in-tatters”… there are people who work hard to make ends meet, but meet up with various difficulties. – There are even parents who can’t do as much, because it’s all going to their children’s college funds… and some of the kids have to sacrifice, getting jobs (some part-time, and for those old enough, a full time job at a grocery store, or wherever they can) to try to add as much to the pot, as they can. They’re not going to be mistaken as a family who lives in the Hamptons, or Mulholland Drive, but they are not all “ragged and torn” looking all the time, either. It’s a stereotype and stigma that still seems to linger in attachment to the word poor…

Thanks, I really WAS a very studious girl (In subjects I liked – a bit like Holly in FBFW) because most of the math subjects were beyond me (just Physics and Logic, where I did well). But I still went into engineering after my divorce because it sprang from drafting.

There are only two types of people who need to be over-madeup to look good from 20 feet away; one of them is a stage actress.
